I have to admit something I never imagined I would get so interested in watching the FIFA WORLD CUP. Growing up, football meant the NFL, and if I wanted speed and intensity, I watched hockey. Soccer just wasn’t something I paid much attention to. But after watching several World Cup matches this year, I’ve changed my mind.
The World Cup Final between Spain and Argentina had me glued to the television. It wasn’t slow. It wasn’t boring. It was fast, strategic, emotional, and every bit as competitive as football or hockey. Every pass mattered. Every scoring opportunity felt huge. By the time the final whistle blew and Spain earned a hard fought 1-0 victory to become world champions, I understood why billions of people around the world love this sport.
Then came the trophy presentation. President Donald Trump joined FIFA President Gianni Infantino to present the World Cup trophy to Spain. Before the ceremony even began, something else caught my attention. When President Trump was introduced, many fans inside the stadium booed. During the television broadcast, you could also see spectators holding up red cards in his direction a soccer symbol typically used by referees to send a player off the field. The gesture was unmistakable. There were so many fans participating that, at times, the television cameras shifted away from close up crowd shots and instead showed wider views of the stadium.
Whether you agreed with the fans or not, it was clear that many people in attendance wanted to express how they felt. Then came the moment that everyone had been waiting for. Spain had just won the biggest prize in international soccer. The players were preparing to lift the World Cup trophy together, the moment every child dreams about when they first kick a soccer ball. But instead of immediately stepping away after presenting the trophy, President Trump remained on the stage as the celebration began. It appeared that FIFA President Gianni Infantino was trying to usher him aside so the players could have their championship moment, but President Trump stayed on the platform for a time before eventually moving.
Watching it felt….awkward. This wasn’t a campaign rally. This wasn’t a political event. This wasn’t about any president or world leader. It was about Spain.
Those players had spent years training, sacrificing, and fighting through one of the toughest tournaments in sports. They had earned their moment in history. That’s why I found it so strange. As I watched, I couldn’t help but wonder if President Trump had hoped for a different outcome in the match. Of course, only he knows what he was thinking, so I can’t say that as a fact. But remaining on stage during Spain’s celebration made me question why he didn’t simply step aside and let the champions have the spotlight.
One of the things I love most about sports is that, for a brief moment, politics disappears and the athletes become the story. We remember Michael Jordan holding the NBA trophy. We remember hockey captains lifting the Stanley Cup. We remember Super Bowl champions celebrating with their teammates. And now we should remember Spain lifting the FIFA World Cup. The spotlight belongs to the champions.
Whether you’re a supporter of President Trump or one of his critics, I think most sports fans can agree on one thing, when a team wins a championship, let the players enjoy the moment they’ve spent their entire lives working toward. That’s what fans came to see.
The joy.
The tears.
The hugs.
The celebration.
Not the people standing beside them.
This World Cup turned me into a much bigger soccer fan than I ever expected to be. The competition was outstanding, the atmosphere was electric, and Spain earned every bit of its championship.

For me, the image that should be remembered is the players lifting that trophy together. Sometimes the greatest act of leadership is knowing when to step back and let someone else have the moment they earned.
